Classic Door and Window Frames
There are basically three types of frames for doors and windows:
Wood – The original window frame medium, wooden window frames have been around for centuries. Although wood window frames retain their inherent charm whether they are painted or stained, wooden window frames tend to warp and/or rot. Many wooden window and door frames come sheathed in aluminum or vinyl, giving the window frame further protection while still providing the insulating advantage of a wooden frame.
Vinyl – Vinyl frames are becoming more and more popular nowadays, due to their excellent insulating properties and fair market price. Vinyl frames also do not crack, flake, or peel. Vinyl window frames and door frames vary in quality and price. When researching vinyl window frames, pay attention to the finish of the frames, and the solidity of the joints.
Aluminum – Aluminum window and door frames remain popular in warmer climates. Aluminum frames incorporate the advantages of strength, low maintenance, and cost effectiveness. Aluminum windows and doors are often painted both for style and ease of maintenance.
Classic Window and Door Styles
The style window that you choose can make a great difference in both look and ventilation. The nice thing about replacing doors and windows is that you are not bound to the old style; new style windows and doors can really give your home a whole new look.
Single-hung Windows – A very traditional choice, single hung windows open by sliding the lower pane upwards. Only the lower half of a single hung window can be opened.
Double-Hung Windows – Similar to single hung windows, double hung windows are opened by sliding the panes upwards or downwards. Unlike single hung windows, double hung windows offer the advantage of opening on the top and bottom. Double hung windows may be adjusted to allow for air flow at the top and bottom of the window.
Horizontal Roller Windows – Horizontal roller windows are similar to single hung windows and double hung windows—just turned on their sides. Horizontal roller windows are opened by sliding the pane to the right or left.
Casement Windows – Casement windows open with a crank or lever, so that the entire window is open. Casement windows provide for the maximum amount of ventilation, and seal tightly when closed.
Awning Windows – Awning windows operate in a similar fashion to casement windows, except that awning windows open from the bottom, rather than the typical side opening found in casement windows.
Fixed Light Windows – Fixed light windows are stationary windows that do not open or close. Fixed light windows come in just about every shape and size, from the standard picture window to circles, octagons, and any other shape window.
Bay Windows – Bay windows are comprised of a group of windows that extend outward, creating a larger view and aesthetic attraction. Bay windows may include fixed light windows along with standard double hung windows or casement windows, or any other combination thereof.
Bow Windows – Similar to bay windows, bow windows are made of a group of four or more windows, creating an outwards arch or curve.
Sliding Glass Doors – Sliding glass doors lend charm and easy access to the outdoors. Sliding glass doors typically come in two-, three-, or four-panel versions. Care should be taken to ensure that the doors slide easily on their tracks.
French Doors – French doors provide a classic look that has remained popular for centuries. French doors may be comprised of moveable or stationary doors, or a combination.
