Q: Is it possible to add plumbing underground? I’m concerned that the sewer line is higher than the fixtures.
A: Although the placement of the sewer line will certainly impact on your plumbing, there are still plenty of viable options for below-ground plumbing. Q: How do I know what size water heater to install?
A: Your water heater should be large enough to accommodate the maximum usage that it will have to facilitate at any one given time. This number is called first-hour rating (FHR) on the energy guide label. Common hot water estimations include:

- Bathing- 15-25 gallons per bath
- Shaving- 1-3 gallons

Q: How can I make sure my basement doesn’t flood?
A: Install a sump pump; typically, 1/3 hp is enough for occasional water flow, and 1/2 hp is needed for daily flow. You can also get a battery-operated sump pump for backup, and a high-water alarm.
Q: Do water heaters need maintenance?
A: Yes, but just a minimal amount. Test the pressure relief valve regularly, and replace if necessary. Flush out the sediments at least once a year. Finally, check the anode once every year or so, to ensure that your tank won’t rust.
