Choosing Your Heating or Cooling System

In the market for a new heating or cooling system? Here are a few tips for you.

Of course you’ll want to compare prices on different heating and cooling systems. Keep in mind, though, that the actual price tag on an HVAC system is only one piece of the puzzle. Considering the fact that heating and cooling systems use approximately 40-60% of your home’s energy, you’ll want to be sure that your choice is economical in the long run as well.

Aside from the initial price quote, consider the installation and eventual operating costs of your new HVAC system. Energy efficient systems save you money each time they are used, and the difference in cost may be more than compensated over the course of time. In addition, bear in mind the maintenance, cleanliness, and noise related to the heating or cooling unit. Installation costs of heating and cooling systems may include:

  • Connection to gas or electric power lines
  • Storage tanks for propane or oil
  • Venting system, when necessary
  • Thermostats
  • Equipment (boiler, heat pump, baseboard heater, etc.)
  • Ducts or pipes
  • Labor involved in installing any of the above

Purchase prices for heating systems may run from $1000 for baseboard heating in a small house, to over $12,000 for sophisticated ground-source heat pump systems, with many gradations in between.

Keep an eye out for the EnerGuide ratings found on the back page of the manual for most HVAC products. Electric furnaces are excluded from the EnerGuide rating system, since there is relatively little difference in energy efficiency amongst various models of electric furnaces.

Ground source heat pumps may be a good choice for individuals seeking a clean, environmentally friendly alternative for whole-house heating and cooling. Ground system heat pumps work with strategically-placed underground pipes, leading to the most efficient transfer of heat either into or out of the home, depending on the season.

Whichever HVAC system you choose, be sure to install it through the services of a reputable HVAC specialist.
